What Soccer is to Me

Authors note: This is an essay about all the life skills that i learned from soccer. You might be surprised because you could look at my life and see some of them now.

The event that changed my life the most was playing soccer. I am really committed to it and so is my family. Any time I have a soccer game dad always makes time to watch my game. When it comes to sports I am very competitive. I met a lot of people from different places. When my parents go to my soccer games they give up their time to bond with me and to get to know me better.

The first soccer club that I was one was the Team Elmhurst. When I got onto the A team I was so excited because I got on better team than my friend. I was so excited to be on this team. Now I had two practices a week. This was a lot at the time because I was only in the third grade. My parents said that if I did not finish my homework that I couldn‘t go to my soccer practices. That taught me that I would have to be more responsible for all of my things that I have to do for school. Also they taught me to try harder in everything I do.

The next year I was able to play for my school team. They are called the Blazers. When I started to play on the 4-6 grade team I was so excited because I would get to show all my friends all the moves I learned from last year. I had to work harder than I did before. Everyone was bigger and stronger, but not faster. This taught me more about the sport from all the time that I was playing. It taught me how to handle bigger kid and use my strengths to my advantage. I got more confident when I started scoring goals. This made me one of the better players on the team and everyone wanted to be my friend. This taught me how to know my real friends from the fake ones.

The two years later I was on the Blazers but I played on both soccer teams, the 4-6 grade and the 7-8 grade team. I knew this was going to be a challenge for me. It was hard for me to do all of the homework because a lot of the time I would get hurt or tired out. It took me a while to get used to the new style of play and better players. Ones I got everything strait it was not as hard for me for the older kids to trust me with the ball. I became friendly with all of my new players. It was kind of cool because they were my body guards. I liked it so much that when I moved here I would try my hardest to make friends like that. If you look at the people I hang around you’ll see that I succeeded.

Soccer is a hobby, but it’s not just a sport. It taught valuable life skills that I will carry with me the rest of my life. I love the game because of this. Soccer isn’t my hobby; it’s a part of me.
